Wakefield Public Schools to Host Heart Screenings for Wakefield Students

Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Heart Problems Can Be Detected Before Tragedy Strikes

WAKEFIELD, MA, Oct 29, 2007 – Today, the Wakefield School District announced it will partner with HeartScreen America, of Andover, MA to offer heart screening services to the community. The Wakefield School Committee unanimously voted to hold the screening and Interim Superintendent Joan Landers encourages voluntary participation, emphasizing that "our community's heart health is vitally important".

Many heart conditions that can cause sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can be detected with a simple, painless, non-invasive test, the electrocardiogram (often called an ECG or EKG). According to the Heart Rhythm Society, SCA claims over 14,000 young American lives each year.

HeartScreen America's screening program includes an electrocardiogram, which is reviewed by a board-certified cardiologist. In addition, each participant receives a family and personal heart health questionnaire, blood pressure reading and BMI calculation. The adult screening program also incorporates a cholesterol and glucose reading. Results are then sent to the home so this information can be shared with the family physician.

Screenings will be held at Wakefield Memorial High School on Tuesday, November 13 during the school day for high school students, and from 4pm-8pm for the public. Screenings are voluntary with the cost of the screenings paid for by parents, guardians and adult participants. The price is $49 for children (6 - 18 years old) and $69 for adults. Typically, this test is not covered by health insurance unless there are symptoms or a family history. To register, visit www.HeartScreenAmerica.com, or call 866-722-8008. A HeartScreen America representative will be at Wakefield High School for an Information Session with time for questions & answers on Monday, October 29, at 7:00pm.
