Eastport/South Manor Athletic Booster Club to Host Heart Screenings
Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Heart Problems Can Be Detected Before Tragedy Strikes
Eastport/South Manor, NY, October 29, 2007 – October 29, 2007- The Eastport/South Manor Athletic Booster Club is hosting a preventive heart screening program on Saturday, December 1 from 9AM-4PM, and Sunday, December 2, from 9AM-1PM.
The program, run by HeartScreen America, Inc., will take place in the Eastport/South Manor Jr/Sr High School at 543 Moriches Middle Island Road, Manorville, NY, and is open to all community members age 6+. Pre-registration is required by November 28, 2007 at www.HeartScreenAmerica.com or by calling 1-866-722-8008. Screening appointments are limited, so early registration is encouraged.
After volunteering at the Louis J. Acompora Foundation's screening with HeartScreen America in Northport last April, Janet Stevens was determined to bring a screening to her home town of Manorville. Stevens, Director of Emergency Cardiac Programs at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip is a registered nurse and CPR and AED trainer, and is an active member of the Eastport/South Manor Central School District Board of Education. She was instrumental in spreading the word about the necessity of screening and bringing HeartScreen America to her area. "I am delighted that we were able to bring this life saving program to our schools. If even one child's life is saved through early detection of heart problems, our efforts will have been rewarded infinitely," said Stevens.
"It's a great preventive measure," agreed Amy Agnesini, Eastport/South Manor Jr/Sr High School Athletic Director. "I support this type of program and encourage all parents to have their kids screened."
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) claims thousands of young American lives each year. Many seemingly healthy children die suddenly and unexpectedly every year from heart problems that can often be detected with a simple, painless, non-invasive test, the electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG).
In addition to an electrocardiogram, each screening participant will receive a family and personal heart health questionnaire, blood pressure reading and BMI calculation. The electrocardiogram portion of the screening is quick and painless, and the total screening takes approximately 10 minutes. A board certified cardiologist reviews the findings of each ECG result and the results are sent to the participant's home in about 7 - 10 days.
Screenings, which normally cost $49 for children, are being offered for only $30 thanks to the generosity of sponsors including the Louis J. Acompora Foundation, Robbie Levine Foundation, Eastport/South Manor Sports Association (ESMSA), Eastport/South Manor Football Booster Club, Eastport/South Manor Boys and Girls Lacrosse Booster Clubs, and the Manorville Soccer League. Additionally, the first 100 ESMSA members to register will receive a $5 refund by contacting the ESMSA after registering. The services provided can cost $500-$800 at outpatient facilities, and health insurance generally will not cover this test unless a young person exhibits symptoms.
