North Shore Regional School District to Host Heart Screenings for NSTHS Students and Local Community
Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Heart Problems Can Be Detected Before Tragedy Strikes
MIDDLETON, MA, NOVEMBER 12, 2007 – Today, the North Shore Regional School District announced it will partner with HeartScreen America, of Andover, MA to offer heart screening services to the community. Coordinator of Athletics, Health, and Student Activities, John Lynch, along with the support of Superintendent Amelia O'Malley and Principal Daniel O'Connell, were instrumental in bringing this program to the students of North Shore Technical High School (NSTHS) and the surrounding community. "This is a no-brainer. It's an ideal opportunity to get kids and young adults screened to potentially save lives." said Lynch. He continued, "As a parent of two former athletes, I would have jumped at the opportunity to have my children screened and be sure that I was taking advantage of all avenues to protect them."
Many heart conditions that can cause sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can be detected with a simple, painless, non-invasive test, the electrocardiogram (often called an ECG or EKG). According to the Heart Rhythm Society, SCA claims over 14,000 young American lives each year.
HeartScreen America's screening program includes an electrocardiogram, which is reviewed by a board-certified cardiologist. In addition, each participant receives a family and personal heart health questionnaire, blood pressure reading and BMI calculation. The adult screening program also incorporates a cholesterol and glucose reading. Results are then sent to the home so this information can be shared with the family physician.
The program will be held at North Shore Technical High School over two days. On Friday, January 25, 2008 from 9am-3pm, screenings will be during the school day for NSTHS students only. And, on Saturday, January 26, 2008 from 9am-3pm, they will be open to the public. Screenings are voluntary, and cost $49 for children (6 - 18 years old) and $69 for adults. Typically, this test is not provided to children or covered by health insurance unless there are symptoms or a strong family history. To register, visit www.HeartScreenAmerica.com, or call 866-722-8008. Please note that pre-registration is required by January 22, 2008. No walk-ins can be accepted.
