SAVING YOUNG HEARTS TO OFFER HEART SCREENINGS

Saving Young Hearts Sponsors Screenings:
Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Heart Problems Can Be Detected Before Tragedy Strikes

OCOEE, FL – JULY 13, 2007: Saving Young Hearts today announced that as a service to the community, it is sponsoring a preventive heart screening program on Fri, August 17 from 10AM -6PM, and Sat, Aug 18 from 10AM - 6PM.

The program, run by HeartScreen America, Inc., will take place in the West Oaks Mall Community Room at 9401 West Colonial Drive, Ocoee, FL, and is open to all local children ages 6-18. Pre-registration is required by August 14 at www.HeartScreenAmerica.com or by calling 1-866-722-8008. Spots are limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Saving Young Hearts was established in memory of Sean Alexander Anderson, who died unexpectedly in 2004, at the age of 10. The mission of Saving Young Hearts is to advocate for education and awareness programs about sudden cardiac arrest in children and young adults, and for the placement of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in Florida schools and other places where young people gather, as well as to encourage and facilitate CPR/AED education. Its vision is to offer free heart screenings to school aged children for early detection of underlying heart problems. The screening in August is to be the first of many offered to the children of Central Florida by Saving Young Hearts and HeartScreen America.

According to Martha Lopez-Anderson, who founded Saving Young Hearts along with her husband Andy, "There is nothing we can do to bring our beloved Sean back, but there is much we can do to educate parents and communities about the imminent possibility of SCA in children and young adults and advocate heart screenings for early detection in school age children. I encourage parents to get their children screened."

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) claims thousands of young American lives each year. Many seemingly healthy children die suddenly and unexpectedly every year from heart problems that can often be detected with a simple, painless, non-invasive test, the electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG).

In addition to an electrocardiogram, each screening participant will receive a family and personal heart health questionnaire, blood pressure reading and BMI calculation. The electrocardiogram portion of the screening is quick and painless, and the total screening takes approximately 10 minutes. A board certified cardiologist then reviews the findings of each ECG result.

Screenings, which normally cost $49 for children, are being offered for $10 courtesy of Saving Young Hearts with the help of many local and national sponsors. Additionally, the first 100 participants to register will receive a $10 refund check at the time of their screening. The services provided can cost $500-$800 at outpatient facilities, and health insurance generally will not cover this test unless a young person exhibits symptoms.
