NORWOOD YOUTH FOOTBALL AND CHEER OFFERS HEART SCREENINGS TO ALL NORWOOD RESIDENTS
Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Heart Problems Can Be Detected Before Tragedy Strikes
Norwood, MA – 28 Jun 2007: Norwood Youth Football and Cheer today announced that it will sponsor preventive heart screening sessions on Monday July 16 from 10 AM - 6 PM, and on Tuesday July 17 from 10 AM - 7 PM.
The program, run by HeartScreen America, Inc., will take place in the Willett Room of the Norwood Recreation Center at 165 Nahatan Street in Norwood. Pre-registration is required by July 11 at www.HeartScreenAmerica.com or by calling 1- 866-722-8008.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) claims over 5,000 young American lives each year. Many seemingly healthy children die suddenly and unexpectedly every year from a heart problem that can often be detected with a simple, painless, non-invasive test, the electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG).
Norwood Youth Football and Cheer serves 325 children ages 7-15, but the screening sessions are open to anyone aged 6 and up.
"Heart disease doesn't choose athletes over non-athletes," says League President Cheryl Nardelli. "Why not encompass the whole family?" Nardelli says the screenings are being offered to "go a step further in protecting all Norwood children from the types of tragedies we read about in the newspaper."
Screenings cost $49 for children (6 - 18 years old) and $69 for adults. These services can cost $500-$800 at outpatient facilities, and health insurance will not cover this test unless a young person exhibits symptoms.
In addition to the electrocardiogram, each participant receives a family and personal heart health questionnaire, blood pressure reading and BMI calculation. The adult screening program also includes a cholesterol and glucose reading.
