Beverly Recreation Department Offers Heart Screenings
BEVERLY, MA, MAY 29, 2007: The Beverly Recreation Department today announced that it will sponsor two preventive heart screening sessions on Friday June 29 and Saturday June 30. While the goal is to screen and protect youngsters, the sessions are also open to seniors and the whole town, according to Recreation Director Bruce Doig.
The program, run by HeartScreen America, Inc., will take place at the G.A.R. hall at 8 Dane Street in Beverly. Pre-registration is required between June 4 and June 22 at www.HeartScreenAmerica.com or by calling 978-474-8008.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) claims over 5,000 young American lives each year. Many seemingly healthy children die suddenly and unexpectedly every year from a heart problem that can often be detected with a simple, painless, non-invasive test, the electrocardiogram.
"You hear about tragedies. Accidents do happen," says Doig. "Some things are missed in regular physicals. The screenings are a benefit to folks who want their kids screened."
Screenings cost $49 for children (6 - 18 years old) and $69 for adults. Alternatively, these services can cost $500-$800 at outpatient facilities and health insurance will not cover this test unless a young person exhibits symptoms.
In addition to the electrocardiogram, each participant receives a family and personal heart health questionnaire, blood pressure reading and BMI calculation. The adult screening program also includes a cholesterol and glucose reading.
