HeartScreen America Supports New York State's
Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Day
ANDOVER, MA, MAY 9, 2007: Continuing its advocacy of awareness and education on heart health issues, HeartScreen America, Inc. today announced its support of New York State's Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Day. New York Governor Elliot Spitzer has declared May 31, 2007 as Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Day in New York State, "To educate the public about sudden cardiac arrest, to identify those at risk, to honor the memory of those who have fallen victim to sudden cardiac arrest, and to celebrate those who have survived by the timely use of an Automated External Defibrillator and cardiopulmonary resuscitation."
The day is held on the birthday of Louis J. Acompora, a young athlete who died at age 14 from sudden cardiac arrest. Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Day is supported by organizations and foundations, such as the Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation and the Heart Safe Club of Rhinebeck, advocating for awareness and screenings across New York State and the country. Free CPR and AED training sessions will be held by several hospitals throughout the state on May 30 and 31, 2007. For more information, please contact your local hospital.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) claims over 5,000 young American lives each year. An electrocardiogram (ECG), a simple, painless test, can help detect heart abnormalities that may lead to cardiac arrhythmias which in turn, can lead to SCA. Unfortunately, every year, apparently healthy children die suddenly, with no warning symptoms beforehand.
In April, HeartScreen America partnered with the Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation to bring a heart screening to Louis' hometown of Northport, NY. The Healthy Heart Screening Program, which was sponsored by the Foundation and Oxford Health, included a family and personal heart health questionnaire, blood pressure reading, BMI calculation, and an electrocardiogram (ECG). All ECGs were reviewed by a board-certified cardiologist. The screening program was available to Northport, NY students and over 200 children were screened.
"HeartScreen America's mission is to save lives by providing accessible, affordable heart screening through community events such as the Northport screening," commented Bert R. Vining, President and COO, HeartScreen America.
