HeartScreen America Offers Preventive Heart Screenings to Merrimack College
North Andover, MA – 18 Dec 2006: HeartScreen America, Inc. of Andover, Massachusetts has launched its collegiate heart screening initiative with a heart screening event at Merrimack College on December 14 and 15, 2006. HeartScreen America screened Merrimack’s winter athletes and offered screenings to the entire student population.
HeartScreen America is a large population heart screening company that screens for underlying heart defects in a mission to save lives from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), which claims over 5,000 young Americans each year.
Though young athletes are at the highest risk for SCA, heart screening is not a component of a routine physical examination and is why Merrimack College President Richard Santagati was eager to partner with HeartScreen America. Birgid Hopkins, Merrimack’s Sports Medicine Director, saw the need for these screenings because of increased incidence and awareness of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes on the courts and fields of schools. Most often, death is the first symptom of sudden cardiac arrest. However, screening hearts has been proven to save lives, as shown in a 25-year Italian study in which a government mandate for all athletes to undergo heart screening before being cleared to participate in athletics reduced SCA deaths by 90%.
Merrimack is the first college in the nation to take advantage of HeartScreen America’s preventive heart screenings, and has planned several mass screening for early 2007, including the ongoing screenings of spring and summer athletes and the general student population. The recent screenings were covered by local newspapers and New England Cable News’ “HealthWeek” airing Sunday, December 24.
Merrimack College is a medium-sized private school in North Andover, Massachusetts that competes in the Hockey East Association and Northeast-10 conference.
