How to prepare for your Heart Screening.
Please plan to arrive ten (10) minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time and bring your confirmation letter with you. This will help us process your information quickly and accurately.
Please review and follow the guidelines below to ensure the best quality heart screening results.
How to prepare for your screening:
- You will be required to remove all clothing from the waist up (including undergarments). Please wear a shirt that you can get in and out of easily. Gowns will be available for your privacy.
- You will be asked to take off your shoes.
- Remove any items that are metal. This includes metal hair barrettes, all jewelry, belts and watches.
- Wearing pantyhose is NOT recommended.
- Turn off your cell phone and any other electronic devices prior to entering the screening room.
- One parent/guardian will be allowed to accompany a minor into the screening room. Other family members will be asked to wait quietly outside. Any children in the waiting area will need to be accompanied by an adult.
- Do not bring any pets into the screening center.
- Inform your technician if you have a pacemaker.
What to expect for your ECG screening:
- After you enter the screening room, the technician will take your blood pressure.
- You will be asked to remove all clothing (including undergarments) above your waist. Gowns are available for your privacy.
- You will then lie on your back on the screening table and be encouraged to relax.
- Ten (10) small stickers (electrodes) will be placed on your chest, arms and legs after the technician has cleaned these areas with alcohol wipes.
- The technician will run the ECG test and then remove the stickers (electrodes).
- After the stickers are removed, you can get dressed.
- The test does not hurt and takes only a few minutes.
What to expect for your Cholesterol and Glucose screening:
- After you sit down, the technician will take your hand to see if it is warm to the touch. If it is not, the technician will rub your hand to warm it (or use a heating pad).
- The technician will massage a finger (usually your middle or ring finger) to increase the blood flow.
- Your finger tip will be wiped with an alcohol pad and allowed to dry.
- Using a small lancet, the technician will prick your finger tip to allow a small amount of blood to flow.
- A sample of blood will then be obtained by the technician.
- After that, your technician will apply pressure and place a bandage on your finger.
- Then the technician will run the cholesterol and glucose test in the measuring device. Approximately five (5) minutes later you will have your results.
